“Kramies Windt, the Denver-based artist who releases ethereal pop music using only his first name, finds inspiration writing music while confined to his coat closet. In itself, this is not so odd; Kurt Cobain was said to do the same thing. What makes this interesting is how Kramies music is so very expansive rather than claustrophobic. It’s as if writing in a cramped space inspires a longing for an expanding landscape.
This longing is also translated in the music. While Kramies uses synth to create a dreamlike quality that should engender disconnect, he uses acoustic guitar and other singer-songwriter elements to create an emotional directness. It’s a gorgeous contrast that has brought him international attention.
In previous incarnations, Kramies has opened for music heavyweights like Yo La Tengo and Calexico. Perhaps it was these connections that brought Todd Tobias, producer for Guided By Voices, on-board to produce tracks for Kramies new EP, “The Wooden Heart,” to be released on the Australian label Hidden Shoal Recordings. Kramies also enlisted Jason Lytle of Grandaddy fame to produce tracks. Clearly, he leaves the coat closet from time to time.”
